HIT Survey Information
Responses for the 2006 TASC HIT Survey
The Technical Assistance and Services Center (TASC) surveyed 26 Critical Access hospitals in Iowa to identify their use of HIT. A summary of the survey is as follows:
- 77% of hospitals have a formal IT plan
- 85% have funding included in their budget for purchasing information technology
- 11 out of 26 hospitals said their clinicians use hand held computers/ PDAs
- All hospitals surveyed have internet (92% high-speed, 4% dial-up, 27% wireless)
- 81% of hospitals said they have encrypted secure e-mail access for all staff to protect patient confidentiality
- 100% have computerized claims submissions and 100% have computerized patient billing
- 96% have computerized payroll
- 92% have computerized registration and admission
- 35% of the hospitals use bar-coded patient identification bracelets
- 77% of hospitals surveyed do NOT use electronic medical records
- 12% of the hospitals surveyed keep physician's notes and 27% keep vital signs records in electronic format
- 85% of hospital pharmacies have computerized allergy and drug interactions and 73% have computerized dose recommendations
- 65% of hospital pharmacies have an automated medication dispensing machine
- 19% of the hospitals use telepharmacy
- 73% have computerized clinician review of radiology results
- 25 out of 26 hospitals use teleradiology technology to transmit images electronically
- 6 out of 26 hospitals use telemedicine to consult with clinicians at other sites regarding patient diagnosis and/or treatment
- 38% of the hospitals transmit EKG tracings electronically to clinicians at other sites
- 15% of hospitals do NOT share clinical data with other departments within the hospital
- 15% of hospitals surveyed have physician offices or clinics connected electronically to the hospital's information system
- 36% have long-term care facilities connected electronically to the hospital's information system
- 12% of the hospitals share clinical data electronically with other hospitals

Indiana A National Leader In New Federal Funding For Health Information Technology
Over the next five years, Indiana will receive $10.8 million, of which $9.3 million was awarded to the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) from a new federal program to promote the use of information technology in health care. Follow the link above for more information.
