Improving Health Outcomes for Children in Rural Kentucky Schools Utilize telehealth technology to bring needed healthcare resources into public school clinics by connecting the University of Kentucky, St. Claire Regional Medical Center, Fleming County Hospital, Lewis County Primary Care and 13 public school clinics to provide education to combat our high rates of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, obesity, cancer, and smoking. Telehealth will bring clinical and educational support to children to improve early diagnosis and treatment and help students make better choices and improve chronic disease management. Information Technology Development and Improvement - New Horizon New Horizons Health Systems, Inc proposes to develop and implement an infrastructure of immediate medical technological information to assist in the delivery of emergency and primary healthcare services. Kentucky TeleCare - Kentucky TeleHealth Network The Kentucky TeleCare Network has been active since 1994, and helped launch the legislatively mandated Kentucky TeleHealth Network, co-managed by the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville in 2000. This program is focused on providing clinical, educational and administrative support for healthcare in rural Kentucky. Teleradiology Enhancement Project - Marcum & Wallace Memorial Ho To continue to provide local access to radiology and echocardiology services to our rural community by utilizing telemedicine/teleradiology. All physicians who provide healthcare services to our hospital through private practice, specialty clinics, and emergency services will be linked to the project, which will expedite diagnosis and treatment. University of Kentucky: Kentucky Telehealth There are over 100 telehealth sites in Kentucky to help improve access to care for all Kentuckians The Kentucky TeleCare Network uses videoconference technology and medical devices, such as electronic stethoscopes to bring patients from rural Kentucky together with University of Kentucky physicians, helping reduce the need for travel. With the use of high speed communication lines, Kentucky TeleCare is able to bring specialists and patients together, thus allowing the patient to get the treatment he or she needs without leaving their community. As a part of the UK College of Medicine, Kentucky TeleCare assumes a leadership role in addressing the healthcare needs of the commonwealth and to be preeminent among medical schools in selected areas of education and service. |

Grant Funded HIT Projects
2007 USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Recipients
October 1, 2007 . Acting Agriculture Secretary Conner announced the selection of 78 grant recipients for Distance Learning and Telemedicine grants totaling $22.3 million in 31 states. The Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program was created to improve access to education and medical services through the use of technology. Of the grants announced today, 38 will provide access to medical services and 40 will be used to improve educational opportunities. The grant funds will be awarded to the selected recipients contingent upon meeting the conditions of the grant agreement. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) HIT Grants In September 2004, the Agency for Health care Research and Quality (AHRQ) awarded $139 million in contracts and grants to promote the use of health information technology (health IT) through the development of networks for sharing clinical data as well as projects for planning, implementing, and demonstrating the value of health IT. AHRQ funded projects: ED Information Systems: Kentucky & Indiana Implements and trains users of a Web-based electronic record system in the emergency departments of two small community hospitals, one medium-sized community hospital, one rural hospital, and three private primary care physician practices; evaluates the reduction in medical errors, waiting time, and costs as well as patient and physician satisfaction. AHRQ funded projects: Meeting Information Needs of Referrals Ele Identifies essential technological needs for accessing and sharing data and information between patients and health care providers; develops an implementation plan to expand the transmission of referral information electronically in a closed health system to an open system. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Telehealth G In 2005, HRSA administered 159 telehealth/telemedicine projects. Of those, 92 were awarded funds totaling more than $34.9 million. Projects receive funds in one of four ways: The Telehealth Network Grant Program, Rural Telemedicine Grant Program, Congressionally Mandated Projects, and Special Projects. NLM Knowledge Management & Applied Information Grants Grants to health-related and scientific organizations that wish to optimize the utility of clinical and research information.NLM anticipates making 8-10 new awards each year, spending approximately $4 million per year to support new awards in this program. Kentucky State Office of Rural Health
Kentucky e-Health Network The Kentucky e-Health Network was created to help develop a secure statewide electronic network through which patients, physicians and other health care providers can access and transfer medical information. Kentucky Health Care Infrastructure Authority Senate Bill 2 (SB 2) calls for the development of a statewide program to reduce medical costs and improve health care by establishing the Kentucky Health Care Infrastructure Authority, a joint venture between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. The program would investigate ways to use information technology and other means to improve health care. The authority is also aimed at implementing pilot projects to improve patient care and control costs. Kentucky Telehealth Network The Kentucky Telehealth Network's goal is to provide quality health care to individuals in rural areas without regard to time or distance. It's overseen by a nine-member Board of Directors and includes all three medical schools in the state and nearly 70 rural healthcare facilities. |
