Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) HIT Grants

HIT Survey Information
Responses for the 2006 TASC HIT Survey

The Technical Assistance and Services Center (TASC) surveyed 8 Critical Access Hospitals in New Hampshire to identify their use of HIT.  A summary of the survey is as follows:

  • 75% of hospitals have a formal IT plan
  • 100% have funding included in their budget for purchasing information technology
  • 4 out of 8 hospitals said their clinicians use hand held computers/ PDAs
  • All hospitals have internet (100% high-speed, 13% wireless, 13% dial-up)
  • 63% of hospitals said they have encrypted secure e-mail access for all staff to protect patient confidentiality
  • 100% have computerized claims submissions and 100% have computerized patient billing
  • 100% have computerized payroll
  • 100% have computerized registration and admission
  • 38% of the hospitals use bar-coded patient identification bracelets
  • 63% of hospitals surveyed do NOT use electronic medical records
  • 25% of the hospitals surveyed keep physician's notes and 13% keep vital signs records in electronic format
  • 88% of hospital pharmacies have computerized allergy and drug interactions and 38% have computerized dose recommendations
  • 50% of hospital pharmacies have an automated medication dispensing machine
  • None of the hospitals use telepharmacy
  • 88% have computerized clinician review of radiology results
  • 7 out of 8 hospitals use teleradiology technology to transmit images electronically
  • 25% of hospitals use telemedicine to consult with clinicians at other sites regarding patient diagnosis and/or treatment
  • 13% of the hospitals transmit EKG tracings electronically to clinicians at other sites
  • All of hospitals share clinical data with selected other departments within the hospital
  • 38% of hospitals surveyed have physician offices or clinics connected electronically to the hospital's information system
  • 63% have long-term care facilities connected electronically to the hospital's information system
  • 13% of the hospitals share clinical data electronically with other hospital

Other HIT Activities

Empowering Communities Project
The Empowering Communities Project strives to assist state and community leaders in improving the health of those living in NH by: supporting efforts to facilitate access to health data and building knowledge and skills to engage in evidence-based health improvement processes. With respect to supporting access to health data, the Project initiated the development of the NH Health Data Inventory and demonstrated statewide interest in developing a web-based query system to facilitate easier access to health data.

eHealth Initiative in New Hampshire
eHI is working with New Hampshire on the New Hampshire Health Care Interconnectivity Project to create a road map for a statewide health information sharing network leading toward a safer, higher quality health care system.

E-Roadmap to Evidence-Based Public Health Practice
Developing, implementing, and evaluating public health programs or public health policies (in public health terms an "intervention") that have 1) data demonstrating their effectiveness and 2) a grounding in a health behavior theory or ecological model of health.

Health Data Inventory
The Health Data Inventory is an INVENTORY of health data sources and reports. The Health Data Inventory (HDI) provides useful information about these sources and links to organizations that manage the data. The HDI is not a warehouse of raw data.

New Hampshire Citizens Health Initiative
The NH Citizens Health Initiative seeks to create a system of care that promotes health, where quality is assured and care is accessible, affordable, effective, and safe.

New Hampshire Connects for Health
New Hampshire Connects for Health is an ongoing initiative supported by the New Hampshire Citizen's Health Initiative, the Office of the Governor, the state's insurers, the State of New Hampshire , and many providers, advocates, and business leaders across the state. Its goal it to develop a health information network in New Hampshire that promotes the highest quality of care, improves patient safety, and allows providers and individuals access to medical records in a safe, secure and patient focused system.

New Hampshire Health Information Center
The NHHIC focuses on health information, building products and services complementary to what currently exists to build the capacity to use health information in NH.

New Hampshire Health Information Privacy and Security Collaboration Project
The Health Information Privacy and Security Collaboration Project is conducting a thorough assessment and analysis of business policies and New Hampshire state laws which will impact the ability to create statewide health information exchange. In addition, the project seeks to provide a forum to initiate a state-wide dialogue on the issue of the balance between medical privacy and improved quality of health care services.
