2008 National Conference on Medication Access,
Use and Safety in Rural America

Save the Date - June 5-6, 2008

The PREPP Institute and the National Rural Health Association and their partners are planning a National Conference for June 5-6, 2008 at the Radisson University Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The objectives of the conference include:

  1. Outline current issues related to the practice of rural pharmacy in all practice settings and the impact on rural health care and communities.
  2. Share best practices, innovations and programs for maintaining medication access, fostering continuity of care, advancing clinical pharmacy services as a part of the health care team in rural areas and ensuring patient safety.
  3. Foster collaborations among researchers, practitioners, educators and administrators for addressing rural medication use issues.
  4. Describe rural pharmacy educational experiences and programs for student and practicing pharmacists.
  5. Identify policy issues, current and pending, that impact access and optimal use of medications and rural health care.

The theme of this conference suggests the quality of rural health is dependent on communities maintaining access to medications and systems of care that facilitate optimal medication outcomes. Rural communities have populations that are growing, diversifying and aging. Rural communities are finding ways to maintain and improve the quality and availability of health care services, but are struggling with maintaining local access to medications and the expertise of a pharmacist due to a variety of policy and workforce issues. This conference provides an opportunity to further understand these challenges while showcasing forward-thinking solutions addressing the health care needs of rural citizens and practitioners.
