New Hampshire Flex State Profile

The Technical Assistance and Services Center (TASC), a program of the National Rural Health Resource Center, provides technical assistance for the Rural Hospital Medicare Flexibility (Flex) Program in the form of information, tools and resources. Please describe a success story or innovative program from the Flex program in your state:

The New England Performance Improvement Project (NEPI) network was developed in 2004 as a collaboration among the Flex Programs in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. The network, coordinated through the New England Rural Health RoundTable (NERHRT), utilizes a portion of each state’s Flex grant funds to offer quality improvement resources for critical access hospitals (CAHs). To date, network activities have included an expansion of the RoundTable Web site, hosting an annual performance improvement summit, funding individual hospital projects, and conducting rural-relevant research.

No two Flex programs are alike! What is one unique thing that you would like others to know about your Flex program?

Over the years as all thirteen eligible hospitals have converted to critical access hospital (CAH) status, they have come together to form a network. This has resulted in a pooling of funds for most of the activities under the Flex funding. The pooling of funds allows every hospital to participate in the activities to the extent in which they see a benefit. This has allowed us to offer a number of different quality improvement, financial and operational resources and projects. The CAHs have also appreciated the peer to peer learning and the best practice sharing among the different levels of hospital staff.
