Strategic Planning

When leaders are actively involved in a planning process to develop relevant strategies, rural health organizations are empowered to strengthen regional health care services. The overall goal of providing facilitated strategic planning is to support the rural health organization in reaching toward its vision and meeting its mission. A strategic planning facilitation will include an on-site planning session with the network’s board of directors and hospital or network leaders to develop strategic objectives.

Evaluation Planning

Evaluation is an important part of any project with the critical role of tracking progress, identifying opportunities for improvements and gathering data that tells a story of making a different. The evaluation process generally begins with strategic planning. Services will include an environmental scan, two on-site sessions with the board of directors, staff and project leaders, followed by the development of a strategy map and balanced scorecard. The Baldrige framework is used to evaluate the systems approach to the rural health programs

Many rural health care providers and their communities are building networks to address access, quality improvement and cost reduction. Leadership and direction are essential to the success of networking activities. The Center  and RHI can help you bring community stakeholders together to create a shared vision and find the strategies that will get you there.

Within the complex environment that rural leaders find themselves, the axiom, "We are better together" holds true. Learning how to build support and participation with board members and how to overcome challenges is critical. This training focuses on developing and engaging the board of directors of the network and provides specific ideas, tools and best practices.

Balanced Scorecard Facilitation

Rural hospitals can use the Balanced Scorecard to improve customer service, finance, patient satisfaction and quality of care. The Balanced Scorecard helps rural health care organizations link operations to strategy to measure and monitor service goals. The Center and RHI provide on-site and online education to leadership teams on Balanced Scorecard principles, tool development and successful implementation. Since 2005, The Center has worked with over 30 hospitals in Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota and Texas to provide Balanced Scorecard training and implementation.

Staff Retention and Engagement

For more than 25 years, The Center has witnessed the growing number of challenges facing rural and underserved areas. Rural communities are striving to save local health care resources and are struggling to recruit and retain needed health care providers.  The Center and RHI can help with retaining staff and engaging them in the important work of providing care to their community.

Lean Training

Lean techniques were developed for manufacturing, but have become increasingly useful in health care operations. This is because health care, like the production of cars or houses, involves complex, multiple processes. Lean is a proven way to identify steps in any process that have value and those that do not. The Center provides on-site education about Lean principles and assists with Lean initiatives, including workflow assessment via process walk, mapping, and redesign.
