October 2018

Thank you for all the hard work on your Performance Improvement and Measurement System (PIMS) reports. Your project officers will be reviewing your submissions and will let you know if we have any questions. Do you have any questions or comments about PIMS while you're fresh from filling out the report for the year? Please let me know or even better, start a discussion in the Flex Forum. I would like to keep making PIMS clearer and easier to use, and the only way I can practice continuous improvement is with your help and feedback.

In October the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Office of Federal Assistance Management (OFAM) updated HRSA guidance on acknowledging federal funding on products and written materials supported with federal award funds. Please review the updated examples of appropriate acknowledgment statements for websites, presentations, requests for proposals and other resources.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report on September 28 called, “RURAL HOSPITAL CLOSURES: Number and Characteristics of Affected Hospitals and Contributing Factors.” The report summarized the recent literature on rural hospital closures and particularly relied on the work of the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program. Of course, Kristin Reiter, George Pink and the rest of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) researchers are also familiar to all of us from their work as part of the Flex Monitoring Team. Congratulations to our partners for their work tracking and studying this issue in recent years.

November 15 is National Rural Health Day (NRHD). The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) will be collaborating on the following NRHD events that may interest Flex participants:

  • Webinar on antibiotic stewardship and pharmacists with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), November 13 at 1 p.m. Eastern time
  • Webinar on rural hospital engagement in the Hospital Improvement Innovation Networks (HIIN) with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), November 15 at 1 p.m. Eastern time
  • Telehealth Twitter Chat with the HRSA Bureau of Health Workforce, November 15 at 2 p.m. Eastern time

Watch for more information about these webinars and other NRHD events in the weekly announcements from the FORHP. If you aren’t on the email list you can subscribe to Rural Health Updates.

I wish you a happy fall and a happy National Rural Health Day!
