Cancer Screening and Prevention Campaign

Partial face of a young girl with black hair in a ponytail, in front of a grey wall with text to the left of her that reads "in 14 years she'll graduate with a degree in architecture. Will you see her throw her cap in the air?" a white box is underneath that has a generic hospital logo and a call to action that reads "regular breast cancer screenings are important for you. and the ones you love."

The Cancer Screening and Prevention Toolkit features messaging that emphasizes cancer prevention and awareness, highlighting the powerful motivation of living not just for oneself, but for others. By framing the health journey around the value of relationships and the impact we have on loved ones, this toolkit positions the well-being of others as a compelling reason to prioritize screenings and early detection. The campaign focuses on four types of cancer: breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate.

Meaning to Screening: Yes, living is a pretty good reason to get checked for cancer. However, the importance of living for others can be an even bigger motivator for those afraid to undergo a screening. This direction makes others around us the reward for staying healthy.

This Toolkit supports rural hospitals and clinics in developing external communication materials promoting cancer screenings. Organizations participating in this program will have easy access to a catalog of communication templates. Each template is customizable, saving time, effort, and cost when developing new communication materials.

This toolkit was developed through the Delta Region Community Health Systems Development (DRCHSD) program for the WE CAN Cancer Project.

Campaign Objectives

  • Increase Awareness of Recommended Cancer Screenings
  • Encourage Emotional Engagement Through Meaningful Messaging
  • Drive and Increase Preventative Screening Appointments
  • Support Rural Providers and Healthcare Organizations with Customizable Tools
  • Reduce Disparities in Rural Cancer Outcomes

Target Audiences

Community Members and Current Patients

This audience includes individuals living in rural communities served by small hospitals or clinics who may be hesitant or afraid to get screened due to fear, stigma, or lack of information.

The toolkit’s messaging encourages them to prioritize their health, not just for themselves, but for the people who rely on them. By connecting screenings to family, milestones, and legacy, it reframes prevention as an act of love. Sharing this toolkit locally can help break down fear, increase awareness of screening options, and connect patients to local providers offering timely, accessible services.

Community Partners

This audience includes rural healthcare organizations, clinics, churches, senior centers, schools, local employers, and other trusted entities that can help amplify the message of early detection and support health promotion efforts in rural areas.

The customizable nature of this toolkit makes it an ideal resource for community partners to distribute, co-brand, or include in newsletters, events, or outreach campaigns. Use the materials as a springboard for community conversations, co-hosted events, and potential partnerships that can expand access to cancer screenings and create a shared culture of prevention.
